FACTS ABOUT THE SEC
A builder in the combining of higher education and athletic competition, the Southeastern Conference stands ready for the 21st century. As we head into a new millenium, expect to hear about many SEC colleges receiving outstanding awards in both athletics and education.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Faced with the task of conference realignment after competing with 10 members since 1966, the SEC accepted the University of Arkansas on Aug. 1, 1990, and the University of South Carolina on Sept. 25, 1990, making a 12-member conference. Joining the charter members Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt on July 1, 1991, Arkansas and South Carolina became the first schools added in conference history.
The Southeastern Conference had its best-year ever in 1998-99. In its 67th year of existence, the SEC claimed a league-best 10 national team championships as well as 3 national runner-ups. Winning games doesn't make the Southeastern conference the number one conference in the nation. Academic excellence and superiority combine with athletics to make it the top conference.
The decade of the 1990s has been great for the SEC on the playing field. The league has achieved 68 national team titles, 1,087 teams have participated in NCAA postseason play and 3,097 SEC athletes have accomplished first-team All-America honors. The SEC has averaged more than six national championships per year during the 1990s. The league has had at least one team ranked in the top five nationally in 149 of 189 sports this decade. As you can see, the Southeastern Conference is a force to be reckoned with.
